Stream Bank Protection

The project was completed in June 2016 in the southeast. Past storm damage had filled the stream with sediment and debris. The project scope involved removing most of the sediment in the stream bed, re-grading the stream banks, armoring the banks with Flexamat, and sodding the top of slope.

In the past, rock rip rap was the method for scour protection in the Southeast. However, the county favored a more natural stream bank restoration rather than a traditional hard armor. The design team liked that Flexamat could be vegetated with grass seed and could be planted with live stakes. Additionally, surrounding native vegetation and trees to naturally drop their annual seeds into the open matting. The follow-up pictures in the gallery were taken December 2021, seven years after the installation. The native growth has completely covered the tied concrete block mat.
